The Office of the General Counsel provides legal advice and representation to Utah Tech University, to its constituent units, and to its trustees, administration, and employees while they are acting on the University’s behalf.

Can I obtain outside legal counsel for the University?

No. Faculty, staff, and students may not hire outside attorneys to represent or provide services to the University. Only the OGC is authorized to retain outside counsel.

Can the OGC represent or give legal advice to staff, faculty or students on non-University matters?

No. The OGC represents Utah Tech University. Any advice on non-University matters is beyond the scope of its duties.

What should I do if I receive a notice of claim, subpoena or other legal notice?

If you receive a notice of claim, subpoena or other legal notice in connection with your University duties, please forward the document via email to an attorney in the Office of General Counsel as soon as possible. Do not respond to the document without first consulting an attorney in the Office of General Counsel. If you receive a subpoena unrelated to the University, you should contact your personal attorney.
